makeup_cosmetics_300x300Many women don’t think twice about what’s in cosmetics. Advertising certainly doesn’t help because all they focus on is how the product is going to make you look beautiful. But did you know that many moisturizers, hair dyes, shampoos and conditioners contain substances that can cause cancer?

Avoid all products that contain these potentially dangerous substances:

Preservatives that release cancer-causing Formaldehyde – Look for DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine and quarternium-15. They are in many cosmetics now. They are dangerous because they slowly release small amounts of formaldehyde, a cancer-causing agent.

Parabens – another preservative, it can interfere with male reproductive functions.

Dibutyl phthalate – also interferes with reproductive functions. This dangerous ingredient can be found in nail polish; it’s added to give polish a high shine.

BHA and BHT – a suspected cancer-causing agent found in moisturizers.

P-phenylenediamine – and colors identified with a “CI” followed by a five digit number, are suspected cancer-causing agents. They are also contaminated with heavy toxins and metals which can damage your brain.

DEA – this ingredient can be found in many shampoos and conditioners. DEA, when it comes in contact with other ingredients, will form nitrosamines, which can cause cancer.

Parfum – the fragrance found in many cosmetics can not only aggravate allergies and asthma but are linked to cancer.

PEG – polyethylene glycols (PEGs) used in many cosmetic cream bases can contain 1,4-dioxane, a suspected cancer-causing agent.
