In 1962 Fidel Castro declared racism dead in Cuba. Unfortunately, progressive policies within education, housing and healthcare were not enough to overturn centuries worth of discrimination. Still, Afro Cubanos supported the revolution as socialism would in theory wipe away the societal injustices done to them. After the Special Period of the 1990’s, Miami Cubans would inadvertently cause race based class divides in Cuba.
