In the story, a great wind blew, but God was not in the wind. An earthquake then shook the earth, and a fire followed, but God was not in the earthquake or the fire. Next, however, came “a sound of sheer silence,” and it was in that silence that Elijah met God 
.
Like Elijah, I may look for God in the great events of life, and I know that God’s power is available in the midst of them. It is in the silence of prayer, however, that I connect with God. I close my eyes, relax my body, concentrate on my breathing, and let a blessed calm flow over me. In the calm, I am immersed in peace
