Central Park was designed in 1858 by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and it became the Nation’s First Public Park. More than 40 million people visit the park each year. One can spend an entire peaceful day roaming its grounds, gazing upon nearly 50 fountains, monuments, and sculptures or admiring its 36 bridges and arches.

The park is home to many animals including: squirrels, birds, fish, rabbits, turtles and frogs. There are 42 species of birds year round and close to 300 species have been sighted in the park.

The park is made up of 843 acres, is 2.5 miles long and .5 miles wide and has 7 naturalistic water bodies. There are 58 miles of pedestrian paths, 6 miles of vehicle drives, almost 5 miles of bridle path, and approximately 20,000 trees.

There are 30 tennis courts, 26 ball fields, 21 playgrounds, two ice skating rinks and a swimming pool.
