On the 7th of July 2021, a score of armed mercenaries broke into the presidential residence and killed the president of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, sparking a nationwide state of emergency and political crisis.
In this video I explore the entire history of Haiti leading up to that point, from the Native American Taíno peoples to the coming of the Spanish and establishment of the colony of Santo Domingo with Christopher Columbus, through the French settlement of Sainte-Domingue and the importation of thousands of African slaves leading to the creation of the Voodoo/Vodou belief system and the eventual Haitian Revolution in which these slaves revolted under the leadership of Toussaint Louverture and later Jean-Jacques Dessalines to oust the French with the aide of their native and Polish allies.
