With a collection of 7,000 books donated by the Hebrew Educational Society, the branch opened in 1905. In 1908, it moved to its present two-story brick and limestone Carnegie building. Its high usage spurred the 1914 construction of Brownsville Children’s Library on nearby Stone Avenue, the first library in the world devoted exclusively to children. Later, it became the Stone Avenue Branch. Brownsville Branch was renovated in 1963 and 1989.
