Virgie M. Ammons, 91, Eglon, WV, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Aurora, WV.Born December 29, 1908 in Gaithersburg, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Mary (Jones) Claggett. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ammons, and three brothers, Joseph, Thomas, and Eugene.She invented the “Inside fireplace chimney which is a device called a “Damper”. The damper is opened and closed to allow smoke from the fireplace to be drawn upward out of the house. The “Fireplace Damper Actuating Tool” designed by Ammons allows the damper to be “locked” in the closed position, preventing cold air and dust from blowing down the chimney back into the house.”
